Philosophy. All the wines at Smith & Wilson Estate Wines are produced on-site with grapes or fruit grown on our family farm. Our location in the Lake Erie North Shore Wine Region provides us with ideal growing conditions. We have been growing grapes for over 25 years and we know that in order to produce high-quality VQA wines you have to grow the highest quality grapes. We apply that same approach in the making of our fruit wines. Our objective is to produce small-batch, high-quality wines meant to be enjoyed with family and friends.
We are happy and proud to announce that 2011 saw Smith & Wilson vintages win awards of merit in both national and international competitions. Judges for the All Canadian Wine Championships, the Shores of Erie Wine Awards and the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition were pleased indeed with our craft. In all, 9 medals came home to stay!
You’ll notice that we’ve got a slightly different look about our 2010 packaging. We now have twist tops and back labels.
We believe the move to twist tops is a good one, with respect to cleanliness and quality. There’ll be no more cork taint. Twist top bottles can be stored in any orientation. The tighter seal will preserve the fruitiness of your favourite Smith & Wilson. Wine is an organic thing, always changing, so bottle aging will still occur, but it will be slower and more graceful. We think that’s a good thing. Admittedly, twist tops do diminish the drama and romance of bottle opening. But, it is well worth the sacrifice to ensure a taint-free wine that offers consistent aging and maintained flavour and freshness.
As our visitors know, George and I have been our back label since we opened in 2005. Well, we’ve been thinking that a rest might be a good thing so creating a back label was suggested. Also, in response to people asking, “What goes with this wine, anyway”, we’ve realized that tasting notes and a talk about terroir on a back label were in order.
2010 is a great vintage. All of the stars aligned happily – an early spring, a hot summer with moderate rainfalls and a long, lazy fall worked together in our favour. The maturity and balance of the 2010 growing season and George’s winemaking skills coupled together to show all that our terroir can provide. Every variety showed well this year. Enjoy!
