Smith & Wilson Estate Wines is located in the middle of the Lake Erie North Shore wine region. We have been producing and supplying grapes to wineries for over 25 years. In 2005, we opened our own winery. As a small family-owned winery, our philosophy is to prepare small batch, quality wines to be enjoyed with family and friends. Our vineyards are grown on our third generation century farm, with the vines growing on a gently sloping gravel ridge that falls to meet the north shore of Lake Erie. Our land is sandy loam over a limestone and granite lakebed base. With these wonderful conditions we are able to produce vintages of exceptional quality.

What’s New?

New Digs – We’ve moved our shoppe out of our family room. We’ve been slowly (did I say SLOWLY?) renovating a quaint new space at the back of The Old Warehouse, which is just across the laneway from our house. I live in hope that by Christmas time, we’ll have the new entry way in place. Watch for the signs to show you the way to our great tasting wines!

New Harvest – September’s weather presented a challenge to bring in the bounty, but judging from our wines in progress, we can expect great things from the 2011 vintage. (You know what they say – if it were easy, everyone would be award winning winemakers….)

New Wines – Winemaker George is experimenting with the first S&W Red vintage – a heritage variety of grape that he has been nurturing for the past 4 years. Stay tuned for updates on its progress.

New staff – Lisa Johnson joined us late last year to help bring The Old Warehouse on stream. Master Taster Ron Bellefleur has come on board to broaden our offerings. Ron will put his wealth of knowledge and passion to work to create fun and interesting seminars and events throughout 2012, so watch for more from Ron.

New Shoppe Dog – Eddie joined us this year, courtesy of daughter Joan. He’s a shy little black Cocker Spaniel who just wasn’t ready for the bright lights of the big city when Joan took a job at Princess Margaret.

What’s Old?

The “Ruins of Cedar Springs”. That’s what’s old. Our great event area set in the broken foundations of a 100-year-old cattle barn was a popular gathering space for many visitors this year. The vista of the lake, vineyards and our natural flora were enjoyed by all while sipping a glass of Smith & Wilson wine of your choice.

What’s Next?

Smith & Wilson hopes to expand our reach a little further from home. We’re attending more focused “Taste and Order” type events throughout the province in the next few months. We’re implementing a new online sales feature and expanding our Newsletter reach. And through the use of The Old Warehouse hospitality facility we can invite more of you in for a visit. The wines, the spectacular view and the people make a trip to Smith & Wilson a truly memorable experience. Our region boasts the most sunshine hours in Canada! So, while we can’t guarantee the weather chances are it will be good! Come and visit us soon.
